Discourse Relations and Connectives in Higher Text Structure

The present article investigates possibilities and limits of local (shallow) analysis discourse coherence with respect to the phenomena global higher composition texts. We study corpora annotated relations in Czech partly English try find clues annotation indicating a structure. First, we classify patterns subsequent or overlapping pairs relations, hierarchies formed by nested relations. Special attention is then given crossing paragraph boundaries their semantic types, paragraph-initial connectives. In third part, examine situations which annotators incline marking large argument (larger than one sentence) relation even minimality principle rule place. Our analyses bring (i) new linguistic insights regarding signals contexts, e.g. detection description up 5 levels English, distribution differences types cross-paragraph other settings, identification connectives only typical for structures, prevalence left-sided arguments locally data; (ii) as another type contribution, some reflections on methodologies approaches under scrutiny.
